Making a big move can come with a lot of hidden costs. That’s why calculating a good moving out budget is hard.
All sorts of questions and task can arise last minute which can keep you from making a smooth transition.
Depending on the type of move your making necessities like utilities or the internet will need to be set up beforehand.
Planning ahead to can serve to be beneficial, especially if the move is time-sensitive.
In this post, we help you calculate a good moving out budget as wells as few tips to make moving out a breeze.

The Cost To Of Moving Your Stuff
I’ve moved too many times to count and by far the hardest part of moving is the actual move itself.
Every time I’ve made a move, I elected to use my Toyota Camry as the moving truck.
It’s obviously the cheapest option if you don’t have much to move with or if the move is a short distance.
All you need to do is make a few trips from your old home to your new one.
Self-moving Cost: $0 – $150
Tip: A friend with a truck and free weekend can definitely come in handy.
I know this isn’t ideal for a long-distance move, so the next best option is renting a moving truck.
There are a few to choose from but will use a U-Haul for our example. A U-Haul’s cost can vary based on the size and distanced of travel.
Renting a U-Haul to move from Florida to Raleigh, North Carolina will range in price.
A 10′ truck can cost $837.00 and the 26′ truck will cost 1,101.00.
The rates can be subject to change and this why it’s important to plan.
The size of a 10′ truck can carry studio to 1 Bedroom Apt and the 26′ can hold a 3 bedroom home to 4 bedrooms home.
U-Haul also has midsize trucks available as well.
Partially Assisted Cost: $837 – 1,101.00
The last options are to pay movers from a moving company.
Prices here can vary wildly as these sorts of companies are paying for time, labor, and marketing cost.
I’ve heard people getting good rates and others not so much.
So, it might be a good idea to shop around and talk to various moving companies in your area.
Plus, timing is everything — moving during the busy season almost always costs more.
Without doing any math and just with a bit of calling around to local movers in my area.
A long-distance move can cost anywhere between $2,000 to $5,000.
This rate is based on moving from Florida to Raleigh, North Carolina. Depending on how big the move is it could be more.

The Cost Of Moving In
Another cost is to think about is the cost of moving in. Are you moving into an apartment or home?
Does this apartment/home have roommates or are you living alone? All are important questions for calculating a good moving out budget.
If you’re moving into an apartment a property manager may ask for a security deposit.
The security deposits can be the first and last month of rent or in some cases, it could be a miscellaneous cost to secure the apartment.
As an example, will use the Raleigh, North Carolina area for apartment move in.
A one-bedroom in Downton Raleigh will cost $1,166 a month.
So, first and last month will cost 2,332.00 + admin fees: 150 + application fee: 50 totals 2,532.00
There isn’t an exact science to calculating move-in fees. There are so many variables to consider.
If you are apartment hunting in a big city like New York or Miami and you’re using a broker, you may have to worry about broker fees.
Tip: A rule of thumb for me is “the simpler it is the better”.
The best tip is to use websites like craigslist or join Facebook group center around apartment buying in the area you plan on moving to.
You can circumvent extra fees or long leasing agreements. Also, some of these apartments can come furnished.

Finally Here: Inconclusion
If we were to calculate all our cost in a cost-effective manner the 10′ U-Haul truck for $837.00 would be our base for a one-bedroom move.
Anything that is leftover or that can’t fit in the truck goes in the Toyota Camry.
The cost to move into our Raleigh North Carolina apartment including additional fees is $2,532.00.
-Extra costs like fuel and food might average up to $200.00.
If you were to round up all these costs, you’re looking at $3,600.00 as initial cost to make move from Florida to Raleigh North Carolina.
The reason I added an additional $1,000 to our 2,532.00 calculated budget is to cover essentials like a bed, nightstand or kitchen gear.
As time progresses, you can steadily add more to items to stylize your new home.
Tip: Ikea will be your best friend. Ikea is great for cheap yet stylish home wear.
Huge Disclaimer these costs aren’t fixed and subject to change at any time in the future.
Also, the area in which we used for our example is “decent” in terms of the cost of living.
Big cities like DC, Miami or New York will differ in cost and tend to have a few more hidden cost.
There is also the errors in the fact that other costs may arise upon moving.
The point of this post is to calculate a good moving out budget based on the most important aspects of moving.
If you examine all the information in this post a good budget to have is between 3,500 – 5,000 for a one-bedroom to a small apartment size long-distance move.
